When you’re invited to a wedding, the dress code is your key to knowing what to wear. From elegant black-tie affairs to casual celebrations, each dress code sets the tone for the event. To help you navigate these options, we’ve broken down the most common wedding dress codes: Black Tie, Formal, Semi-Formal, Cocktail Attire, Dressy Casual, and Casual. We’ll also dive into how regional styles, like wearing nice jeans in Texas, can influence what’s appropriate.

Black Tie

What It Means:

Black Tie is the epitome of sophistication and elegance. When you see this on an invitation, expect a glamorous evening event.

For Men:

Men should wear a tuxedo, a formal white shirt, a black bow tie, and black patent leather shoes. A black formal vest or cummerbund is optional but adds a nice touch.

For Women:

Women should opt for a full-length gown. Think elegant fabrics like silk or satin, and feel free to accessorize with statement jewelry, a clutch, and heels.

Formal

What It Means:

Formal, also known as Black Tie Optional, is slightly less strict than Black Tie but still very polished.

For Men:

A dark suit and tie are the norm, though you can still wear a tuxedo if you prefer.

For Women:

Women can choose between a long gown or a chic cocktail dress. Dressy separates are also appropriate, as long as they maintain a formal vibe.

Semi-Formal

What It Means:

Semi-Formal gives you a bit more flexibility while still requiring you to look polished. This dress code is common for weddings held in the late afternoon or early evening.

For Men:

Men should wear a suit and tie, though lighter colors like gray or blue are acceptable.

For Women:

Women can wear a floor length or cocktail dress, a dressy skirt and top, or a jumpsuit. The goal is to be elegant yet comfortable.

Cocktail Attire

What It Means:

Cocktail Attire is similar to Semi-Formal but with a bit more room for personality and flair.

For Men:

Men should wear a suit and tie, or a pair of nice slacks with a blazer. Feel free to experiment with colors, patterns, and textures. A pocket square or fun tie can add a bit of individuality.

For Women:

Women should opt for a cocktail dress that is usually a lighter fabric. This is your chance to play with bolder colors, prints, and statement accessories.

Dressy Casual

What It Means:

Dressy Casual is a step down from Semi-Formal but still requires you to look put together. It’s often the choice for outdoor or daytime weddings.

For Men:

In many parts of Texas and other regions with a relaxed yet polished style, men might wear a crisp pair of nice jeans paired with a blazer, dress shirt, and boots. Alternatively, slacks and a button down also work well.

For Women:

Women can choose a cocktail dress, sundress, or even a skirt and blouse. Think polished, but comfortable and suitable for a variety of settings.

Casual

Photo By: For Love in the Light Photography

What It Means:

Casual is the most relaxed dress code, often seen at beach weddings, backyard celebrations, or rustic venues.

For Men:

In Texas, it’s not uncommon for men to wear well-fitted jeans with a button-down shirt or polo. Pair them with dress shoes or boots for a look that’s laid-back yet respectful of the occasion. Slacks and a short-sleeve shirt are also appropriate.

For Women:

Women can wear a sundress, a simple skirt, or even tailored shorts with a nice blouse. Flats or sandals are suitable footwear, keeping comfort and style in balance.

Final Thoughts on Dress Codes

Navigating wedding dress codes can seem tricky, but understanding the guidelines can help you make the right choice. Whether you’re attending a grand black-tie event or a casual country celebration, the key is to dress appropriately while reflecting your style.

When in doubt, it’s always better to err on the side of being slightly overdressed than underdressed—after all, weddings are a celebration, and looking your best is part of the fun!

Don’t mind us, we’re just over here jumping for joy because we’ve been (im)patiently waiting to share this exquisite wedding with you. Erica and Marshall’s wedding was the epitome of understated elegance, blending modern elements with organic beauty. Hosted on Marshall’s parents’ picturesque property, the couple created an intimate celebration that was both chic and timeless, with only their closest friends and family in attendance.

Trying to collate this gallery on the best of the best images to share was so hard, not only because of how amazing this wedding was, but how absolutely perfect Erica & Marshall’s photographer captured the day.

The Details:

The couple chose a classic black and white color palette, which set the tone for a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere. This monochromatic scheme was woven throughout the entire event, from Erica’s stunning white gown and Marshall’s sharp black tuxedo to the sleek, minimalist decor. We’ll let the detail shots speak for themselves.

The Ceremony:

Erica and Marshall’s wedding was a small, intimate affair, focusing on what mattered most to them—celebrating their love surrounded by the people they hold dear. The scale of the event allowed for a more personalized experience, where every detail was carefully curated to reflect the couple’s style and values.

The Wedding Party:

Erica & Marshall’s wedding party of course has to have a moment for themselves. They understood the assignment. From candid pictures to stylized poses they helped set the vibe for every photo. We’re deeply obsessed with the untraditional approach to bridesmaids bouquets. The flower basket arrangements were absolute perfection and the perfect detail to round out Erica & Marshall’s modern, organic wedding. We can’t wait to see this trend continue in the near future.

Erica & Marshall:

We of course can’t talk about Erica and Marshall’s wedding without showing off the bride and groom themselves. Throughout our process with the couple, they had such an air of appreciation, respect, and genuine love for each other. On our first visit to the property, we could see the vision blooming before us, but what came on their wedding day was more perfect than even they expected. We dare you to find a more photogenic couple.

The Reception:

The day was beautifully documented by their photographer Michele Grace Photography, who used a warm, documentary style to capture the event. We are quite literally obsessed with this gallery, and love Michele’s candid approach. Each photograph is a testament to the love and joy that filled the day, with every candid moment telling a story.

Erica and Marshall’s wedding was a true celebration of modern elegance, with every detail thoughtfully considered to create a day that was as beautiful as it was meaningful. We had the absolute honor of being a part of this exquisite celebration and wish Erica and Marshall a very happy life together.

As wedding planners, we’ve had the privilege of witnessing countless weddings unfold into unforgettable celebrations. One trend that consistently elevates the experience for the bride is changing into a different dress for the reception. If you’re on the fence about making a wardrobe switch on your big day, let us share some reasons why it’s a fabulous idea.

Comfort & Mobility

Your wedding gown is likely a stunning masterpiece, but it might not be the most comfortable attire for a night filled with dancing and mingling. Reception dresses are often designed with comfort and mobility in mind, featuring lighter fabrics and a more relaxed fit. Changing into a reception dress allows you to fully embrace the festivities without being weighed down by a heavy gown or long train.

A Fresh, New Look

Let’s face it; your wedding day is your moment in the spotlight. Why not make the most of it by showcasing a second look? A reception dress gives you the opportunity to express a different side of your style. Whether it’s a sleek, modern silhouette, a fun cocktail dress, or a glamorous short number, a second dress adds to the wow factor that will leave your guests with their jaw dropped.

Preserving Your Wedding Gown

Your wedding dress is a cherished keepsake, and wearing it throughout the entire event increases the chances of spills, stains, and tears. Changing into a reception dress helps preserve the integrity of your wedding gown, allowing you to store it in pristine condition as a beautiful reminder of your special day.

A Moment to Breathe

Your wedding day is a whirlwind of emotions and activity. Taking a moment to change into a new dress gives you a chance to breathe and reset before diving into the reception festivities. It’s a chance to regroup, touch up makeup & hair, and share a quiet moment with your partner, so you can re-emerge feeling refreshed and ready to celebrate.

Because it’s cute…duh

Okay this one is really just our perspective on it but there are so many cute white dresses out there we think they deserve a moment to shine too. For example, our friends over at Celebrations Bridal & Prom has an adorable collection of little white dresses perfect for an outfit change. We love anything that adds a little extra pizzazz to your wedding day and this is a fun (and practical) way to add a wow factor.

Convinced You Need a Reception Dress Yet?

Changing into a different dress for your wedding reception isn’t just a fashion statement; it’s a comfortable, and exciting way to enhance your wedding experience. As wedding planners, we encourage you to consider this option as a way to fully embrace the joy and spontaneity of your big day. After all, it’s your wedding—why not make it as unforgettable and uniquely yours as possible?

In a world where traditional weddings often follow a predictable script, Bec and Javier decided to break the mold and create a celebration that truly reflected their unique personalities and love story. Their untraditional wedding was a small, understated affair with a distinct Texas flair, designed to be a big party where they could celebrate their union with their closest friends and family.

Javier and Bec envisioned a wedding that was anything but conventional. They knew from the start that they wanted their special day to be intimate, genuine, and an epic party. With Bec originally from Australia, they chose to do two smaller celebrations, one in San Antonio and one in Australia so all of their closest friends and family could have a chance to celebrate with them. This decision not only made the celebration more meaningful but also allowed them to focus on the personal touches that would make their day unforgettable.

Both professionals in the digital marketing industry, Javier and Bec knew the importance of capturing authentic moments. They chose a photographer who specialized in candid, unposed photography, the incredible Dani Quiroz Photography, resulting in a wedding gallery that looked like it was straight out of a lifestyle photoshoot. The photos captured the genuine emotions, laughter, and the little details that made their day special.

The couple incorporated San Antonio’s rich culture into their wedding through a variety of details such as lotería cards for seating assignments, incredible Tex-Mex cuisine complete with pan dulce for dessert, and a Mariachi band for cocktail hour & dinner,

We can’t write about Bec & Javier’s wedding without touching on their impeccable style. Javier sported an all black ensemble complete with a bolo tie for a small salute to his Texas upbringing. Bec kept it simple but bold for the ceremony & dinner with a bow & veil combo, and a classic a-line dress with a leg slit. She opted for a more “dance friendly” outfit and changed into a 1920’s inspired little white dress to party the night away (which we are still obsessed with).

Bec and Javier’s wedding served as a reminder that the best weddings are the ones that truly reflect the couple’s personalities, values, and love for each other. They kept what felt natural and comfortable to them, and threw the rest out the window for a celebration that was truly authentic. Congratulations again Bec and Javier! We wish you the absolute best in the journey of your lives together.

Colorful Spring Wedding

When we got the gallery back from Jen and Kipp’s colorful, spring wedding at The Preserve at Canyon Lake, we knew the world deserved to see these two. Try finding a picture where Jen isn’t smiling, I dare you. They wanted a simple, but epic party to celebrate the start of their lives together and they got just that.

The Details:

April 28, 2024 was an absolutely beautiful day after a weekend of rainy weather. The couple wanted a colorful spring wedding full of beautiful flowers and candle lighting. Jen and Kipp met while they were both attending college at Texas A&M so it goes without saying they had their aggie rings photographed and included the Aggie War hymn during their reception.

In addition, the couple chose to incorporate sentimental mementos into their big day such as a swatch of Jen’s mother’s wedding dress tied into a bow on their card basket. One of what we can easily say was the coolest details of their wedding, was their getaway car which Kipp’s parents used years before to depart from their wedding.

The Ceremony:

Jen and Kipp wanted their celebration to reflect their love story—sweet, genuine, and full of joy. One of our favorite things to ask the Father of the Bride and the Groom on the wedding day is “Are you going to cry?” Whether that be during first look or when she walks down, it is always interesting to hear how they feel they’ll react and then see it play out in real life. Both Jen’s dad and Kipp said they weren’t big criers, and that wasn’t how their relationship was and that they were more the grinning ear to ear type. Spoiler alert, they both cried.

The Couple:

Kipp and Jen are easily one of the most down-to-earth, laid back couples we have had the honor of working with. In our initial meeting, we asked them “What is the most important part of your wedding day to you?” And Kipp’s answer was “I just want to marry her.” *cue the tears*

The Party:

When we talked about what they envisioned for their reception, Jen and Kipp said they wanted a laid back experience with an epic dance party. Their dance floor was packed all night long, and they even had a “re-proposal” when Kipp got down on one knee to Taylor Swift’s “Love Story.”

The Support System:

You can tell a lot about a couple based on the people they choose to surround themselves with. Jen and Kipp’s entire family and friends were so upbeat, kind, and such an amazing support system. It was truly intoxicating to witness such an outpour of love surround the entire day from getting ready to the final send off of the night.

Jen and Kipp’s colorful spring wedding will live rent-free in our heads for months (if not years) to come. It was an absolute joy to witness and be a part of their perfect day.

Jen and Kipp’s happiness was as catching as their smiles. If you’re ready to experience your own perfect day, contact us and we’d be happy to help.

Let us first start off by saying, Congratulations! Being engaged is one of the most exciting times of your life as you prepare to celebrate the start of you and your partner’s lives together. Planning a wedding can be so much fun as you pick the perfect aspects and aesthetics for a party all about the love the two of you share. Amidst the flurry of inspiration boards and Pinterest-perfect visions there’s one crucial aspect that often gets overlooked: Budgeting. While it is definitely not the most glamorous part of wedding planning, being realistic about what you can comfortably afford is essential to avoid unnecessary stress and financial strain. Here’s why setting realistic expectations for your wedding budget from the beginning is key, along with some tips to help you navigate the process with ease.

Why Realistic Budgeting Matters:

  1. Financial Wellness: Let’s be real, weddings are expensive. Being realistic about what you and your partner can comfortably afford is essential to avoid unnecessary stress and financial strain. Setting a realistic budget allows you to enjoy your special day without worrying about the financial repercussions afterward.
  2. Prioritization: Every couple has different priorities when it comes to their wedding day. Whether it be an epic dance floor, or amazing catering, by establishing a budget, you can identify what aspects of the wedding are most important to you and allocate your resources accordingly.
  3. Avoiding Disappointment: Being realistic with what you and your partner can afford is so important in avoiding disappointment during your wedding planning process, as well as day of. If you and your partner establish clearly how much you can afford for each vendor this will help in great lengths in the long run when it comes to planning and not overspending in one area that leads to cutbacks in another.

Tips for Setting a Realistic Budget:

  1. Know Your Limits: Take an honest look at your financial situation and determine how much you can realistically afford to spend on your wedding. Consider factors such as your income, savings, and any contributions from family members.
  2. Research Costs: This is a BIG one. Before diving into wedding planning, research the average costs of different wedding elements IN YOUR AREA. This will give you a better understanding of what to expect and help you set realistic expectations for your budget. We often see couples astounded by the price of things not fully understanding all the work vendors put into what they do, or everything that is needed logistically to make what they want happen. Having a realistic expectation can help avoid those jaw dropping moments when you get a quote from a vendor.
  3. Be Realistic When it Comes to Your Venue: So often, we see couples fall head over heels for a venue that is not realistically in their budget. If your total wedding budget is $30,000, a $15,000 venue is not realistic in the long run when still needing to hire catering, bartending, florals, rentals, hair and makeup and more. Make sure you also consider venue requirements such as full-service catering, a coordinator and other rules.
  4. Consider Your Guest Count: Your guest count can be a HUGE impact on your wedding expenses. The cost of a 100 person wedding versus a 300 person wedding are vastly different basing on catering costs, centerpieces, florals, bar service etc. Being realistic with your budget also means being realistic with your guest count. If you are planning a large 300-person wedding with a budget of $20,000 you may need to significantly cut back the invite list. Catering costs alone could easily exceed $10,000.
  5. Prioritize Your Must-Haves: Sit down with your partner and make a list of the elements that are non-negotiable for your wedding day. Whether it’s a specific DJ, photographer, or catering package, prioritize the things that matter most to you and allocate a larger portion of your budget to these items.
  6. Be Flexible: While it’s important to stick to your budget, it’s also essential to be flexible and willing to make compromises along the way. If you’re dreaming of a free-standing arch covered in florals or any other large installation, but your budget for flowers is only $2,000 you will need to compromise for something different. Keep an open mind and be prepared to explore alternative options if necessary to stay within your financial means.
  7. Factor in Hidden Costs: Don’t forget to factor in “hidden costs” such as taxes, gratuities, delivery fees, and vendor fees when setting your budget. If you have a hard stop on your budget, factor in 5-10% of that for those hidden fees to avoid being caught off guard later on.
  8. Consider Cost-Saving Measures: Get creative and explore cost-saving measures to help stretch your budget further. For example, repurposing florals from ceremony to reception is a great way to be cost effective with your flower budget and make sure you’re getting the best bang for your buck.
  9. Track Your Spending: Throughout the wedding planning process, keep track of your spending to ensure you’re staying within your budget. Use a spreadsheet or budgeting app to monitor expenses and make adjustments as needed.
  10. Be Strategic: While planning your wedding be strategic when booking your vendors. Make sure you have all of your required vendors booked before you go too far into your wants. For example, make sure you have your planner, caterer, and photographer booked before going to crazy with your florals or decor or specialty vendors such as a photo booth. Booking your required vendors first will let you know what wiggle room you have in your budget when it comes to add-ons and extras.

First of all, congratulations on your engagement!

The wedding planning process can be one of the most fun and exciting chapters of your life. As you begin the exciting journey of planning your dream wedding, one of the most crucial decisions you’ll make is choosing the perfect venue to host this momentous occasion. The venue sets the tone for your entire event, so it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure it meets your needs and expectations. To help you navigate this process, we’ve compiled a comprehensive list of questions that every newly engaged couple should ask a wedding venue before booking (and some even before touring the venue).

Venue Capacity

Before scheduling a venue tour, inquire about its capacity. Knowing if a venue can accommodate your guest count saves time and effort. If you’re planning a grand event with 300 guests but the venue can only hold 150, you can swiftly eliminate it from consideration. This goes hand in hand on date availability as well.

Pricing and Packages

Once you’ve ensured a venue you’re interested in can accommodate the guest count you’re expecting, this is the next big question to ask before touring. The last thing you want is to tour a venue that you fall in love with and find out it is out of your price range. Understanding the rental rates and fees before hand can help minimize disappointment in your search for a venue. When inquiring about pricing, make sure you know what is included within that cost. Is it just for the venue rental, or does it include tables and chairs, overnight accommodations, decor, etc?

Vendor Policies

This is a big one to make sure you ask during your tour or inquiry process. Every venue is different with their requirements for vendors. Some require booking from a specific list, or have rules such as only allowing full service catering, or that all vendors must be insured with the venue listed as an additional insured. For example, The Chandelier of Gruene requires selecting vendors off of their preferred vendor list for catering, coordination, and bartending, but offers flexibility with other vendors. Understanding the flexibility they offer and what the requirements are with vendor selection can help save a lot of time and trouble in the planning process.

Bar & Alcohol

Unless you plan on having a dry wedding, asking a venue about their bar and alcohol policies is a big one. Some venues may offer in house bartending services with various packages available, while others may allow outside vendors to provide this. Make sure you’re aware of who you can hire. As a bare minimum, most venues will require a licensed and insured vendor who provides TABC certified bartenders. In addition, make sure you know other rules with alcohol such as how long the bar can be open, outside alcohol policies, if they allow shots/straight liquor to be served, and security requirements. For example, The Preserve at Canyon Lake does not allow outside alcohol on the property whatsoever (including while getting ready) as they offer in-house bartending and can provide the drinks for you.

Amenities

It’s super helpful to have a good understanding of all the amenities a venue may offer. Do they have getting ready areas for both partners during the morning? Is there a space for vendors to store their extra gear and equipment? Do they have a built in or portable bar or will you need to rent/provide one? Do they offer tables and chairs? Are there dedicated spaces for ceremony/cocktail/reception? All of these questions can impact the logistics of your wedding day so make sure you have clear expectations of what the venue does and doesn’t offer.

Plan B

While we would love for everyday to go exactly the way it is supposed to, sometimes weather has other plans. Ask what their rain plan is if any of the event would take place outside. Whether it be ceremony doubling inside of the reception space, or they offer an indoor ceremony space it is helpful to understand what the process would look like if worse comes to worse.

Cancellation & Refund

Covid really changed the game when it came to navigating cancellation and refunds. Life happens and sometimes things don’t always go according to plan. Whether you’re needing to reschedule the date, or cancel, make sure you ask what the cancellation process and policies would look like so you’re prepared if it came to that.

Decor

While the venue is the backdrop of the wedding day, the decorations are what makes it personal to you. Understanding what a venue offers/allows in terms of decorations from the beginning will set you up for success as you plan the design for your big day. Some venues may offer in-house decor such as The Chapel at Gruene, or have it available as an add-on such as The Allen Farmhaus. Additionally, some may have built in options for statement pieces such as the suspended floral boxes at The Chandelier of Gruene, or the beautiful staircase that you can add florals/greenery to at The Preserve.

By asking these essential questions, you’ll gain valuable insights into whether a wedding venue aligns with your vision and needs. Remember to take notes during your venue visits and trust your instincts when making the final decision. And if you need assistance hunting down the perfect venue (or wedding planning in general), The Perfect Day offers planning packages and would be happy to help! Jolene & Jacob’s Rustic Romantic Wedding

Jolene and Jacob’s romantic rustic wedding was one for the books. From our very first meeting, they told us their focus and intention behind having a wedding was so they could celebrate their families blending together. Both having kids from a previous relationship, they wanted to make sure their wedding focused on the joining of their family and incorporated the kids in everyway possible. They made intentional choices to signify the mixing of their families such as ringing the infamous bell at The Allen Farmhaus as one unit, a tradition for couples to do after they have said their I do’s and have walked back down the aisle.

The new Mr. and Mrs. Huereca focused on creating a fun and lively atmosphere for their kids and their guests and opted for a simple, romantic, elegant approach to their decor. Letting the venue’s rustic atmosphere speak for itself, Jolene and Jacob opted for a soft blue and white color palette. Complete with cheesecloth table runners, gold pearl rimmed chargers, bud vases, votives and candle sticks in various heights it created a cozy atmosphere for their reception.

With their children at the forefront of their minds, they threw typical wedding traditions out the window and opted for fun, kid-friendly ways to reflect their family. In lieu of traditional father-daughter and mother-son dances, the couple opted to dance together with their kids in one big epic dance party. Additionally, they opted out of the big grand wedding cake and kept it simple with a one tier cake and a bunch of kid friendly cake pops and cupcakes.

Their wedding contained many show stopping moments as most do, however one of the most notable is Jolene’s outfit change to her reception dress where she switched into the cutest little white dress paired with cowboy boots for a western flair.

All in all, Jolene and Jacob’s wedding day was a beautiful celebration of two families becoming one. It was an absolute honor to have helped these two enjoy their perfect day.

Backyard weddings have become insanely popular over the years. They’re flexible, intimate, and you can make it as simple or elaborate as you want. But they can also be a logistical nightmare. You might want to ask yourself – where will your guests park? Can your restrooms handle all of your guests? (probably not) Where will your catering team prep? These are just some questions to ask yourself before you decide to plan a backyard wedding. With professional wedding vendors, we can execute your visions, work out the logistics, and turn your residence into a beautiful wedding venue. After all, there’s no place like home!

Why have a backyard wedding?

Budget:

One of the biggest reasons couples decide to host a wedding at their residence is to save money and depending on the complexity of your wedding dreams this is doable. However if your vision is a sailcloth tent, vinyl dance floor, farmhouse tables, cross back chairs, etc. realistically this is not typical but if you’re more of the relaxed couple looking for an intimate gathering under the stars, saving money can be done.

Flexibility:

Freedom to choose your own date, freedom to choose to include pets, freedom to choose your own vendors, freedom to choose everything is probably the best perk when hosting your wedding on your property.

Design:

You’re starting from scratch with a beautiful blank canvas. You have the ability to build exactly what you want. Color of chairs, kind of tables, arbor, dancefloor, etc. You have the ability to take your vision and bring it to life.

Things you might not have thought of

Restrooms

Are you okay with your guests entering your home to use the restroom? Personally, that makes me nervous with so much foot traffic in the home. I would recommend renting portable restrooms. Don’t worry, they have nicer facilities than port-o-potties.

Plan B

While we all hope for perfect weather on our wedding day, it’s important to have a rain plan in case Texas decides to be.. Well, you know, Texas! This will also help you mentally prepare if bad weather were to arise on your wedding, but it will also help guests and vendors stay safe and dry.

Neighbors

Give them a heads up that you’ll be hosting so they don’t file a complaint. This will also allow them to plan ahead or make appropriate arrangements. Fill them in on details such as what time the wedding starts and ends, where your guests will park, etc. Consideration will go a long way.

Lighting & Generators

It is unlikely that your outdoor outlets can suffice your vendors equipment and appliances. Consider bringing in a generator to avoid blowing a fuse and chances are your home does not have enough lighting for your event. Cafe lights, pin spots, and chandeliers are also great ways to illuminate your event as well as set the tone for an intimate gathering.

Insurance

Wedding insurance is a must for any private event but for a private residence it can protect you financially if someone gets hurt or damages your home.
